Description Programming Language/1, released in 1964. A programming language developed for system programming and a great number of administrative and technical-scientific applications. An early programming language created by IBM engineers PL/I released in 1966 was the first language to provide adequate facilities for scientific computations, business data processing, and systems programming. The language was developed by the Advanced Language Development Committee under the Share FORTRAN project. Originally the committee thought they could make changes and additions to FORTRAN. However as time went by, the committee realized they were going to have to design a new language, PL/I. For further research and changes, a PL/I department was organized in IBM to centralize all activities.
