SNOBOL

A language to process chains. A chain (a series of signs and strings or parts thereof) can be manipulated like searching, replacing and inserting.

SNOBOL was designed primarily for string manipulation. It was released in 1962 by Bell Telephone Laboratories. SNOBOL is a problem-oriented language which is simultaneously a hardware, reference, and publication language.
